Križevci :: Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Bishop's Residence

Križevci – an Episcopal Town: - is the most representative sacred object and highest valued monumental site in Križevci.

It is located in the Upper Town on the Franjo Rački Street. It was built on top of old Augustinian foundations back in the 14th century which were later foundations of a Franciscan monastery in the 17th century. In 1777 Empress Maria Theresa and Pope Pio VI made Križevci the seat of the Eparchy, however, the Baroque architecture of the monastery and of the church slowly started its adjustments from 1801 onwards to meet the needs of the Bishop’s residence and of the Byzantine liturgy.
Inside the Bishops’ residence, which is within the area of this splendid church, one can find an exceptionally valued library of Greek Catholic Bishops, and in the near present, there were found many incunabula (incunabula represent the revolutionary transition from the time of hand written manuscripts and that of mechanically printed media before the 1501 in Europe). The library holds the first Bible in Croatian language printed by Peter Katančić in 1831. in Budima.
Also, the library keeps around 5,000 valuable books and the oldest ones found are dated before the 15th century. The church changes its external and internal appearance in 1895 and 1897, thus showcasing the neo-Gothic characteristics which were conceptualized by Herman Bolle, the same person that carried out the restoration of the Cathedral in Zagreb. Paintings found inside the church were done by some of the best painters of the region from the late 19th century and early 20th century. (Bela Čikoš Sesija, Ivan Tišov, Ferdo Kovačević, Celestin Mato Medović etc.).
