St. Mark of Križevci

Born at the end of 16th century. His real name was Marko Krizin. He chose the priesthood. He studied theology and philosophy in Vienna and Graz, then resided in Rome. Later he becomes prebendary at Ostrogon diocese, professor and director of the seminary in Trnava, Slovakia. During the 30-year war, he was in Košice. There he was arrested and tortured, along with Melchior Grodziecky and with István Pongrácz, on September the 7th in 1619. Then in 1904 celebrated as the Blessed Mark of Križevci. With his friends, was canonised in Košice on July the 1st in 1995. Titular of the chapel in the Upper Town with St. Ladislav king. Third proclaimed Croatian saint. For his memorial day large number of people is coming to town to honour him. The program of religious content is held every year at the end of the August till the middle of September.

Municipality day

Municipality Day is celebrated on 24th Križevci of April, and is associated with the memory of the declaration of a free royal city Krizevci on 24th of April 1252. That day banus Stephen declared and established a new royal city in Krizevci giving people who live in it the same liberties that are enjoyed by citizens Grič and Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb). King Bela IV confirmed a document of banus Stephen King, on 16th of August 1253. On this day in the city traditionally held many cultural and artistic events.

Križevačko veliko spravišče

Traditional folk celebration and cultural-historical manifestation which is held every June since 1968. It is based on a legend from the 14th century which talks about reconciliation between citizens of Križevci and the plum farmers from Kalnik. It is also based on the Statutes of Križevci, famous wine ceremonial and the first written rules about behaviour in a cheerful company and at the full table. Legend says that back in the 1242. in front of invasion of Tatars conqueror, king Bela IV took refuge with his army under the wing walls of Veliki Kalnik (Great Kalnik). Persistence of Tatar army to break inside the walls and defeat the royal army is prevented by villagers from Kalnik which have fed brave soldiers by plums. Vigorous fruit has gave to the royal army strength to keep out till the end, and to refuse Tatar attack. Because of that king Bela IV gave to the villagers from Kalnik title of nobility. This act angered citizens of Križevci, and their anger lasted by years till the marriage between boy from Kalnik and girl from Križevci. Their wedding was key moment of reconciliation betwen people from Kalnik and Križevci. Citizens from Križevci today have performance of this known event. In the performance keys of the city was handed over to the town judge and begins three days of general celebration.

St. Martin day according to Statutes of Križevci

Celebration of st. Martin is important event for each winegrower. This is the day when must matures and turns into wine, with humorous ceremony performed baptism must. Celebration is held according to Statutes of Križevci, popular wine ceremony and first written rules of nice behaviour at the table in a good company. According to the Statutes, in every company there have to be three toasts: “toast to the homeland, toast to the good fellowship and the better sex”. The pronunciation used in toasts was an old ornate way of speaking. Today it is valued as a folk custom with food, drink, song and music.

St. Vincent day

St. Vincent day is wine feast, celebrated on January 22nd. Workers in vineyards go in vineyard and cut two or three twigs with buds and leave it by the window. Then they guess will the vineyard year be fruitful. In vineyard they are hanging sausagues which are presenting their wish for the good crop. That day they are playing music in the good mood, tasting old and new wine, preparing food and with it starts new season of working in vineyard.
