Križevci :: Church of the Holy Cross – Concathedral of Bjelovar-Križevci diocese

There are numerous legends about this church and one of these legends has it that in the 6th century, when the fi rst settlers came to this region, exactly to this area, they were thirsty and a well that soothed their thirst gave them a vision of a cross and when they accepted the Faith, the church was built and it was called the Church of the Holy Cross.

This Church is the witness to many historical happenings of this town and its surroundings which is why its settlers kept it in its memories the most. The Church of the Holy Cross is not just one of the oldest well kept monuments in the town but it is also one of the oldest churches in continental Croatia. In written documents, the church is mentioned back in 1232. Some of the urban characteristic that bring this church out from other monuments are that it was built outside the town walls of Lower Town and inside a special fort. The interior of the church also holds a valuable monument. This monument is a late baroque altar carved out of marble, the work of Francesco Robba in 1756.

Originally, the altar was carved for the Cathedral in Zagreb, where it stayed until the Cathedrals’ renovation in the end of the 19th century. According to experts, the altar represents one of the most beautiful sculptures of the late Baroque period of this area, which makes it an important attraction to see for tourists and visitors that visit our town. It is also worth mentioning that the interior of the church holds a large painting by Otone Iveković, which is visible on the arc and it depicts the bloody assembly. It was painted in 1914. and because of the large width of more than eight meters, it is considered one of his largest works.
